Closes nightlife hotspots to combat rowdy behaviour

The Balearic Islands have working to eradicate antisocial tourism linked to alcohol, excess and public disorder to promote a safer and more high-quality tourism product.
The islands took the first step in January, with the publication of a decree law aimed at eradicating this type of tourism and is now reinforcing its commitment to this decision.
In the last 14 days, the archipelago has registered the lowest cumulative incidence rate in all of Europe, with 4.78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
This is a much lower figure than that recorded in Spain as a whole (14.8).
All these measures have been formalised to achieve a balanced situation that protects both visitors and residents, while restarting tourism which is essential for the economic revival of the archipelago.
The islands have continued to strengthen their position as a safe tourism destination in recent weeks, with a strong epidemiological situation when compared to other territories.
The objective of the closure is to prevent antisocial behaviour which could jeopardise what has been achieved in terms of a safe restart for the tourism sector.

Chinese travelers then and now

Favorable visa policies, online booking services and mobile payment have enabled Chinese travelers to explore other cultures freely and easily.
Now, Chinese travelers have become the largest and fastest-growing group of spenders in the world, a new report has revealed.
Chinese travelers spent US$258 billion abroad in 2017 and made over 142 million international departures, according to statistics published by United Nations World Tourism Organization in April.
Chinese travelers don’t just spend a lot of money, but also spend their money in a lot of different ways.  They are more interested in niche tourism markets, such as whisky tasting and aurora-chasing tours, short-term study trips, overseas voluntary camps and outdoor adventures, than many other traditional alternatives.

What are the 20 best islands of the world?

Apprentices were welcomed by John Keating, General Manager, to start their first day at the five-star resort. During their first year, each individual will experience different departments within the hotel, starting with Kitchen, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage and Front Office.
The idea behind the three-year hospitality apprenticeship is to develop a young workforce to be accomplished in all aspects of the hotel business. In their final year, the apprentices will learn the operations of Spa, Golf, Sales, Human Resources and Finance thus becoming Junior Hoteliers.
Underlining their positions as leaders in the hospitality sector, Fairmont St Andrews remains the only hotel in Scotland to offer such a wide ranging hospitality qualification scheme. The resort will welcome five more apprentices in September 2018 with Open Evening events taking place in August, and will see 10 new recruits each year with 20 new apprentices over the next two years.
Fairmont St Andrews General Manager, John Keating commented: “I am delighted to welcome our five new apprentices, and look forward to working with them and developing their skills in a range of different departments.  We are dedicated to developing local talent and skills as part of our ongoing investment in the community. This Hospitality Apprenticeship program provides a great platform for future Junior Hoteliers to train within the tourism and hospitality industry and will not only add value to the business but to their own development and future career prospects.”

Egypt's Alexandria to create private tourist-only

Many Egyptians in Alexandria once looked forward to a day at the beach, but some of its shores may soon be off limits for locals.
Alexandria's tourism office recently announced plans to reserve some beaches for tourists only.
The announcement has angered local people, and many say they're being treated as second-class citizens in their own country.

Tourism to fall as much as 80 percent due to virus

The UN body said the full extent of the fall in international tourism would depend on how quickly international borders open again.
Under a best-case scenario, with travel restrictions starting to ease in early July, international tourist arrivals could fall by just 58 percent.
If borders and travel restrictions are only lifted in early December, the fall would be more in the order of 78 percent.
If the restrictions are lifted in early September, the UN body predicts a fall of 70 percent.
Under these scenarios, the drop in international travel could lead to a loss of $910 billion to $1.2 trillion in export revenues from tourism, and of 100 to 120 million direct tourism jobs.
The body had forecast at the beginning of the year that international tourism would grow by 3 to 4 percent in 2020, but then revised its forecast at the end of March, predicting a 20 to 30 percent decline.
International tourism arrivals rose by 4 percent in 2019 to 1.5 billion, with France the world's most visited nation, followed by Spain and the US.
The last time international tourist arrivals posted an annual decline was 2009 when the global economic crisis hit the travel sector hard.
The tourism industry accounts for about 10 percent of the world's gross domestic product and jobs.

Local tourists start making their way back

Now that Turkey is coming out of lockdown, Demir says the town is bustling again. One main difference, he says, is where people are staying. “People are not entirely trusting of hotels,” he says, “preferring to rent houses instead.” According to Demir, house rental prices have doubled because of the demand.
Demir says that hotels have been given opportunities not given to beach clubs in order to boost their occupancy rates, such as being able to remain open during the latest lockdown when there was a university entrance exam throughout Turkey, when other establishments were not.
Demir tells TRT World that people spend more time at their houses this summer, preferring to stay in at night. He says when the lockdown was first lifted the curfew was 10pm, then it became 11pm, and now it is 12 midnight. Demir points out that up until the first week of June, there had been little to no activity in Alacati.
Demir says some establishments have opened late for the summer, and some have not opened at all. “For example,” he says, “the legendary clubs Sole & Mare and Paparazzi, that are built on wooden platforms and not beaches, have decided to remain closed.”
In past summers, clubs within town limits could stay open until 1am and those outside til 3am. Now the cutoff is midnight for both.
According to Demir, coronavirus precautions are taken seriously in Alacati town, where wearing a mask is obligatory and not wearing one is likely to result in a fine. He says he cannot say the same for the beaches.
“We have trained our staff, we have free disinfectant available, we take the temperature of everyone coming in, we ask our guests to wear a mask, but everyone seems to be much more  relaxed about the coronavirus,” he says. He finds it dangerous that visitors still demand valet service, for example, but emphasises that social distancing measures are carried out throughout the beach.
Sen says Turkish vacationers have arrived at Alacati, and the town centre and surfing areas are quite dynamic. ASPC, Sen tells TRT World, opened on June 1st and is popular as usual. The centre offers windsurf lessons to both adults and children, as well as rentals, kitesurfing, basketball, and cross fit classes.
Sen says all personnel have been taking precautions against the epidemic, wearing masks, using disinfectant regularly, practicing social distancing and disinfecting the premises and the equipment on a regular basis.
“We’re the only surfing establishment with thermal cameras,” he tells TRT World. “We jot down the ID numbers of all our students, and make sure to take their temperatures as they enter. If anybody measures a high temperature, we make them sit in the shade for an hour, and remeasure.”

Göbeklitepe prepares for key UNESCO

The officials are currently busy with completing a roof framing work on a 4,000-square-meter area, costing a total of 6.6 million euros, in an attempt to give the site a stronger protection.

Aslan said the site will be opened to visits back again once the construction is finished.

“We are sensitive with every step we take regarding Göbeklitepe since it has a driving force to attract tourists to nearby areas and the country in general means,” Aslan said.

Fevzi Demirol, mayor of the Haliliye district of Şanlıurfa, said the site is also important in terms of creating jobs for the younger generations.

“If Göbeklitepe is promoted sufficiently, it can become a center of attraction for history enthusiasts. It will accelerate and contribute to Turkish tourism. We are happy that this site, known as the ‘zero point of history,’ is nominated by the UNESCO World Heritage committee,” Demirol said.

Müslüm Çoban, the head of the local tourist guides’ chamber, described the site as the “world’s oldest known place of worship.”

“The UNESCO team will come to Şanlıurfa in September to do examinations in Göbeklitepe. I hope the roof framing work of the site will be finished by then. Göbeklitepe draws attention especially from foreign tourists, meaning more tourists will come to Şanlıurfa. As a result, our hotels will work on more capacity, tourist guides will go on more tours and our artisans will earn more.” Çoban said.
Until Göbeklitepe re-opens to its visitors, the imitations of the artifacts found in the excavations are being presented at the Şanlıurfa Museum Complex.

This year, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has also inscribed the “Aphrodisias Archaeological Site” on the UNESCO World Heritage List upon Turkey’s nomination, which increased the number of properties on the Turkey UNESCO World Heritage List to 17.

The Göbeklitepe site is composed of approximately 20 round and oval structures. There are two T-shaped free-standing pillars with a length of five meters. Monumental structures of Göbeklitepe were deliberately filled with soil by the people of the Neolithic period who built them.

Tourism ‘expected to improve’ in 2017 after tough year

He particularly noted that the Russian market had shown a serious recovery.

Hakan Duran, the chair of Professional Hotel Managers’ Association, said on March 30 that his members expected to host around 3.5 million Russian and 1.5 million Ukrainian tourists in the southern province of Antalya this year. He said there had already been a rise in numbers so far this year.

The number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey soared around 96 percent in February compared to the same month of 2016, although arrivals from Europe continued to decline, official data recently showed.

According to preliminary data released by the Tourism Ministry on March 30, some 39,261 Russians visited Turkey in February.

In 2016, the number of arrivals from Russia into Turkey fell to just 866,256 overall, a 76.2 percent drop from the previous year amid a political crisis between the two countries.

However, arrivals from Europe to Turkey continued to drop in February 2017, with 453,300 people from the continent visiting – a year-on-year decrease of around 19 percent.
